Balancing vulnerability and vitality as well as sentimentality and seduction, Gallant proved himself to be an iconoclastic presence for contemporary R&B upon emerging in 2014. His breakout debut Ology landed a GRAMMY® nomination for “Best Urban Contemporary Album,” bowed in the Top 25 of the Billboard Top 200, placed on Entertainment Weekly‘s “25 Best Albums of 2016 (So Far)” and incited applause from The Guardian, Pitchfork,The FADER and more. Between touring with John Legend and gracing the stage at Coachella, he delivered unforgettable performances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Later… with Jools Holland, and NBC’s Today, to name a few. Not to mention, he made his acting debut on HBO’s Insecure and is contributing music to Steven Universe The Movie, a musical version of the Cartoon Network series returning this fall. With all of these accolades, Gallant laid the foundation to make a big and bold statement with his forthcoming second offering.
GRAMMY® Award-nominated, critically acclaimed singer and songwriter Gallant returns with a brand new single entitled “Sharpest Edges.” Get it HERE via Mind of a Genius/Warner Records. The song notably precedes the arrival of his follow up album to 2016’s universally acclaimed full-length debut, Ology.
Billboard characterized “Sharpest Edges” as “melodic” and “beat-driven.” Over a bright backdrop of neon synths and flourishes of glossy eighties-style production by Stint, Gallant‘s voice slips from evocative verses into a head-bobbing hypnotic hook as he croons, “You’ve got the sharpest edges I’ve ever seen,” and the bridge climaxes with an ecstatic falsetto wail. Bridging eras and defying genres, “Sharpest Edges” illuminates Gallant’s slick, sultry and soulful evolution.
About the song, Gallant commented, “There are two sides to every coin—a bunch of caskets buried underneath every vacation home. I had problems with depression for a long time because even though you get to choose your own outlook on life, it’s hard sometimes to ignore the bad shit, the mistakes you made and the things you could have done better. It’s easier to admit the world is full of sharp edges—and to make a goal to have as many close calls as you can.”
In April, he began teasing his next chapter with the one-off R&B anthem “Gentleman”and its T-Pain-assisted remix. Billboard described it as “atmospheric” and Complex calledit “smooth as butter.” Next up, Gallant will perform at AfroPunk in Atlanta October 12-14 and Life Is Beautiful in Las Vegas September 20-23 as he plots headline dates for later in the year.
Giving back, Gallant recently reimagined the 1992 classic “Runaway Train” by Soul Asylum to raise awareness for National Missing Children’s Day as part of a groundbreaking digital campaign. The new version of “Runaway Train” endeavors to help the search for #missingkids around the country based on utilizing photo, name and location details to assist in geo-targeted multi-state cases. Gallant gives R&B a new edge in 2019. Get ready for more.
